Today I fished the Stour in awful conditions - chocolate brown, high current and bursting banks. Many anglers would have gone home at first sight of the river but since I rarely get a day off I had to lump it. Fortuitously I had pre-oiled my sprats with a couple of ml of lamprey oil prior to freezing them and managed to coax two sub 10lb pike out of the water. Both fish located in slack water a couple of rod lengths from my feet, out of the main current as it thundered past. I concur with your observations and actually like the aforementioned conditions for some pike fishing as there are fewer anglers on the bank - my friend and myself were the only ones.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08610833409412013048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6148904642584189433.post-47738649563915579022014-11-13T23:01:28.338+00:002014-11-13T23:01:28.338+00:00Nice piece. Im a carp angler and i always here people moaning about it been cheating etc. At the end of the day, we all spend a lot of money on fishing with the end goal to catch fish. Anything which gives us an edge is ok in my book. I recently added a fish finder to my microcat from bait boat world (http://www.baitboatworld.co.uk/shop/bait-boat-fish-finder) and it has helped my no end when finding areas to target. Although i dont use it to find fish, its much better at feature finding. Really like the blog and the amazing pictures of those pike. Have you tried using a hypodermic syringe to load the stops onto the trace wire? I've got a couple of big bore jobs purloined from the local horse vets and they are perfect. You put the stops over the needle then slide the trace wire inside it and slide the stop onto the wire. Well done Mick, Jason and Stew and of course Bill.

I've met an awful lot of pike anglers over the past couple of decades and I've yet to encounter a more amiable one than Bill. Not only a terrific angler, but a genuinely nice bloke. A rare combination that. And 'that' picture of the Warren pike in Bill's much lauded book has to be one of the sport's most iconic photographs ever.

Top read from the Pool. Keep it up chaps.
